Country of the month: France

Do you want to know more about selling online in other countries? Then you should not miss our "Country of the month", a brief country guide where you will find the most updated eCommerce information and useful tips for online merchants. Today: France.

MARKET

France is one of the countries with more potential for eCommerce within the European Union. In spite of the current economic situation, the revenues generated by eCommerce keep growing year after year, which implies a great opportunity for international online merchants.

With a total population of 65,8 million people, the number of Internet users has already reached 55,4 million, which leads to an Internet penetration of over 84 percent.

According to the data from FEVAD (Fédération du e-commerce et de la vente à distance), the eCommerce market in France was valued at €31 billion during the first 6 months of 2015, and is expected to reach €65 billion by the end of this year.

France currently has about 167650 online stores, from which more than 20000 were created during 2014.

PAYMENT

When it comes to payment online, French e-shoppers show a strong preference for Carte Bleue, a debit card that can be used also as a credit card. Besides this, other popular methods are PayPal and credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Nevertheless, checks are still relatively common as payment method among French.

Fortunately, ChannelPilot provides a multi-function tool, which helps online merchants to connect easily to all popular marketplaces and price comparison sites, quickly and easily, which results in increased sales and profits, all while saving time and resources.

TIPS

Online shops should take the month of December into account, since French consumers like to buy presents and food prior to Christmas, especially from December 24 to 26. Furthermore, Christmas sales on the Internet (November and December) are expected to reach nearly €13 billion this year, an increase of 13% over Christmas last year.

Apart from Christmas and, of course, Valentine’s Day, other important holidays in France, responsible for extra purchases are Mother’s and Father’s day, on the last Sunday in May and third Sunday in June, respectively.

FEVAD also gives online merchants some other relevant recommendations that should be considered:

  1. Free shipping has a great value for French consumers, who prefer it to a quick delivery.
  2. They like to be informed in advance about additional shipping costs and delivery times.
  3. It is important to them to be able to choose their own date of delivery, as well as tracking their order either by e-mail or through your website.
