New listing requirements on eBay
As of 2016, sellers who list branded items in new or manufacturer-refurbished condition within select categories are now required to include Product Identifiers in their listings.
These identifiers include the item´s brand name, Manufacturer Part Number (MPN), and Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), which are all typically found on the original casing or box.
With approximately 700 million listings active on eBay at one time, the majority of search engines including Google and Bing use product identifiers when locating and displaying the relevant listings for each user´s search, rather than surfing through the abundance of information held by eBay. Due to this preference, all listings in the following categories will need to include product identifiers.
Baby | eBay Motors (Parts and Accessories only) |
Books | Health & Beauty |
Business & Industrial | Home & Garden (Tools and Appliances only) |
Cameras & Photo | Music |
Cell Phones & Accessories | Musical Instruments & Gear |
Clothing, Shoes & Accessories (Shoes only) | Pet Supplies |
Computers / Tablets & Networking | Sporting Goods |
Consumer Electronics | Toys & Hobbies |
DVDs & Movies | Video Games & Consoles |
This new requirement is the next step in eBay´s ongoing effort to improve the experience for all users on the website. It is noted that sellers who include product identifiers in their listings make it easier for buyers to find what they are looking for, both on and off eBay, as well as benefiting from more robust listing information, more accurate pricing, and trending price alerts. More information on the additional benefits for sellers:
- Increased visibility in eBay deals, bargains, and other promotions.
- Most robust listing information and items specifics, which are included automatically by matching your item with a product from the eBay catalog.
- More accurate pricing guidance when you list your items.
- Trending price alert in view item when your listing are priced lower than the trending price and include product identifiers.
eBay has suggested that they will be extending the requirement to additional categories later in the year, for which, advance notice of the changes will be given to sellers so they will have plenty of time to make updates to listings.
